Energy Supplements – Identifying and Understanding Energy Supplements

There is a range of natural energy supplement available today.  Understanding them all can be daunting, but if you categorize them based on role they play, and the effects they have on your body’s energy levels, you can better select the energy supplement that will fit in with your daily routine and provide the results you are seeking.

Generally, you can divide energy supplements and sources into three major categories: Stimulants, Metabolic Stimulants, Calorie-Based.

Stimulants:  Some of the most familiar energy supplement stimulants are caffeine, guarana, yerba mate, green tea and cocoa.  These supplements come from natural substances and are used as a primary or combination ingredients in many energy drinks.  These stimulants all have the common quick acceleration energy boost, followed by an equal and opposite crash.  The duration and intensity of that boost-to-crash cycle varies for each specific stimulant.  Some are more habit-forming than others, but eventually a tolerance is built and impact is lost over time.

Energy Supplements- Metabolic Stimulants

Metabolic Stimulants:  Some common metabolic stimulants include B vitamins, amino acids, quercetin and coenzymes.  These substances are derived from natural foods that are common in a Western diet.  They are often isolated and concentrated for greater effect.  Taking metabolic stimulants usually only have noticeable effect if there is a natural deficiency or a demand that comes from increased exercise and physical activity.  As the body is given the restorative supply it needs, the impact is lost.

Calorie Based:  The most natural way your body derives energy is through calorie intake.  Calories are needed to perform basic metabolic function as well as extended, high-impact physical activity.  Calories are derived from virtually all natural food sources, and the greater the physical demand and energy requirement from the body, the more calories are needed for intake.  For most of us, many of the calories we take in are not equivalent to our energy output, and the excess is stored as fat.  One of the best ways to achieve energy from calories is to increase the physical demand through exercise.

Energy Supplements- Consult Your Physician

Most people can find some benefit through a combination of the above.  Sometimes we don’t feel the potential energy we take in through calorie sources, and this is where a metabolic stimulant or stimulant can be utilized with care and moderation.  Before you incorporate any energy supplement into your daily route, even if it is a natural energy supplement, consult with your physician to ensure your health will not be conflicted and any effects of energy supplements will not be undesired.
