Energy Foods

The ultimate purpose of food is to sustain, giving our bodies sufficient calories that are needed to carry on basic functions and sustain our activity.  If you’re looking for foods that especially sustain energy and fight fatigue, then you have to look beyond calories and onto nutrition.  You have probably heard the term “super food”.  Super foods refer to those foods that have an especially high nutrition density and give our bodies better capability to fight disease and support basic bodily function like nutrition to energy conversion.  There are natural foods that are especially helpful for maintaining energy levels.  Energy boosting super foods include fruits like bananas and blueberries, tree nuts like almonds and walnuts, lean proteins like sardines and salmon, and grains like oatmeal and brown rice.  You can find energy foods in prepackaged food bars and snacks, which can be convenient and efficient as many all-natural energy food products are fortified with energy boosting essentials like B-vitamins.  Just make sure you check the nutritional information to avoid the excess sugar, calories, sodium and chemicals that can be found in some foods that are marketed at diet or energy positive foods despite their actual ingredient content.

Energy Supplements

Energy supplements come in a variety of forms with many different effects and indications among them.  Energy pills, energy drinks, energy bars and any number of diet, weight loss, muscle and body building supplements contain a number of natural and chemical energy boosting substances, from ginseng to ephedra. The most common energy supplements you’ll find on the market today are based in three categories:  Stimulants, Metabolic Stimulants and Calories.  Stimulants impose energy in the body effecting receptors in the brain.  The most widely used energy supplement stimulant is caffeine.  Metabolic stimulants work by stimulating cell function for increased cellular energy.  Quercetin is a well know metabolic stimulant that’s used in many energy supplements.  Calories are used by the body to create energy and are found from natural food sources.  Sometimes you’ll find energy supplements that use a combination of ingredients that fall into one of the above categories.  A lot of it has to do with the type of energy boost you’re looking for.  If you’re seeking a temporary fix to save off fatigue, a stimulant based energy supplement should be enough.  If you’re looking for a more balanced energy by compensating for any nutritional deficiencies that may be affecting your body’s ability to efficiently produce energy, consider a metabolic stimulant.  If you’re sustaining activity naturally, calories will help you replace the lost energy you’ve spent.
